Muela Hydropower Station – Lamella Tank Installation
In January 2025, Next Level IMS was appointed by Spec Corrosion Engineering to undertake the installation of lamella clarifier tanks at the Muela Hydropower Station, managed by the Lesotho Highlands Development Authority (LHDA).
The installation formed part of an infrastructure upgrade to the water treatment system at the hydropower facility, improving operational efficiency and sediment management.
Scope of Work
The project involved the mechanical assembly, lifting, and positioning of prefabricated lamella tank modules, including alignment and bolting onto elevated steel structures.
Working within the mountainous terrain of Muela, the project demanded precision rigging, load coordination, and high-altitude safety measures.
Services Performed:
- Offloading and site preparation
- Rigging and lifting of lamella tank modules using a mobile crane
- Positioning and installation on elevated steel platform
- Final mechanical alignment and fastening
- Coordination with client engineers and LHDA technical teams
- Site safety management and documentation
Technical Summary
- Tank Type: Lamella clarifier system for sediment separation
- Lifting Method: 80-ton mobile crane with spreader bar rigging
- Installation Height: Elevated support frame ~6m above ground
- Crew Composition: Rigging supervisor, crane operator, safety officer, and installation technicians
- Safety Measures: Full exclusion zone, fall protection, and daily HIRA assessments
Challenges & Achievements
Despite difficult access and steep terrain, the Next Level IMS team completed the installation safely and ahead of schedule.
The project demonstrated our ability to deliver precision lifting and structural assembly under constrained site conditions — showcasing both our technical capacity and commitment to safety excellence.
Key Achievements:
- Zero safety incidents or delays
- Successful alignment and installation of multiple lamella tanks
- Commendation from LHDA and Spec Corrosion Engineering for professionalism and efficiency
- Completion ahead of project schedule
Outcome
The completed installation strengthened the hydropower station’s water treatment capacity and reflected Next Level IMS’s growing presence in Lesotho’s infrastructure and energy sectors.
This project further reinforces our reputation as a trusted partner in mechanical installation, rigging, and heavy engineering support across Southern Africa.
